CASA for Kids of East Texas, Inc.

Who We Are

CASA is an acronym that stands for COURT APPOINTED SPECIAL ADVOCATES. CASA for Kids of East Texas was founded in 1990 to protect children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect. For over a quarter of a century, we have been changing lives by advocating for the best interest of foster children in Smith, Wood and Van Zandt Counties. CASA works with families, children, the courts and Child Protective Services to help find safe, loving, permanent homes as quickly as possible.  We served over 600 children in 2017. We are a professional staff of 13.  Our board consists of 15 members, and we monitored 213 volunteer advocates in 2017.

What We Do

The mission of CASA for Kids of East Texas is to support abused and neglected children in Smith, Wood and Van Zandt counties by providing court appointed, trained community volunteers who advocate for loving, safe, and permanent outcomes. Our vision is to provide an advocate for every child who needs one.

Our volunteers are regular citizens, just like you.  Professionals, people with full-time jobs, retired folk, college students, people who work with children, and those whose only real experience has been raising their own children.

CASA volunteer advocates are trained and appointed by the court to be the eyes and ears of the court team, and to ensure the best interest of each child will be addressed in the legal setting by the court team.  CASA advocates are trained to assure the rights and needs of these children are in the forefront of the decisions that are being made by judges, lawyers and family members.

For many of these silent victims, their CASA volunteer is the only reliable adult presence in their lives, and that single volunteer can often be enough to break the cycle of violence and neglect - not just for one child, but for generations to come.
